    Description

Human Cord Blood Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells (ECFCs) by ClonalStem Inc. are a rare, highly proliferative subtype of endothelial progenitor cells derived from human umbilical cord blood. Unlike mature endothelial cells (such as HUVECs) or Early Outgrowth Cells (EOCs), ECFCs demonstrate true "stemness" — possessing high clonal proliferative potential and the intrinsic ability to self-assemble into functional, perfusable vascular networks in vivo and in vitro.

These "Gold Standard" endothelial cells are isolated via ClonalStem's rigorous clonal selection to ensure a high-fidelity population distinct from hematopoietic contaminants. They are the ideal reference standard for researchers requiring robust vessel formation, long-term expansion, and reproducibility in vascular biology.

These cells are critical for advanced research in cardiovascular disease, ischemia/reperfusion injury, blood-brain barrier (BBB) modeling, and tumor angiogenesis. ClonalStem Inc. delivers a stable, reproducible platform for drug screening and tissue engineering where consistent vascularization is the limiting factor.

Also known as: ECFCs, EFCs, Endothelial Progenitor Cells, EPCs, Blood Outgrowth Endothelial Cells, BOECs, Cord Blood Endothelial Cells, Colony Forming Endothelial Cells.

    Quality Control

These cells are characterized by flow cytometry for CD31, CD144 (VE-Cadherin), and CD304 (NRP1), and are confirmed negative for CD45.

    • Negative for Mycoplasma, bacteria, fungi, and yeast.
    • Human viral pathogens HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-1, HTLV-2, HepA, HepB, and HepC are not detected.
    • Isolated from single-donor umbilical cord blood.
Human Material Precaution: All human biological material should be handled as potentially infectious using at least Biosafety Level 2 precautions. Viral testing cannot prove the absence of a latent viral genome.

    Passage & Expansion

Passage number is commonly used to describe cell proliferation capacity, but the true capacity depends on the total number of cell divisions — the population doubling number (PDN) — that a cell type can undergo. Cells passaged at low confluence will require many more doublings to reach confluence, which can yield a low passage number but a population with limited remaining division capacity.

ClonalStem expresses future cell-division capacity as the population doubling number (PDN) remaining after thaw, and current division status as the population doubling level (PDL) reached before cryopreservation. Our early-passage CB-ECFCs are characterized to support extensive expansion under recommended culture conditions.
